The first project undertaken by the Dairy Husbandry Officers trained at Massey Agricultural College (now Massey University) was a statewide investigation of the efficiency of milking machines on farms during 1952-53.  Harry Edgoose built the the teatcup vacuum recorder (above left) in the basement of the Treasury Place building using wartime disposal materials, an altimeter for measuring vacuum changes and a wind up clock for the paper drive.  The Chief of the Dairy Division (T M Jensen) would not approve the use of a car to travel to farms with the equipment so Edgoose transported in the box shown on the sidecar of his motorbike above.  He was paid a motorbike mileage allowance which was cheaper than car rates.  As well as giving the new dairy husbandry officers access to contact dairy farmers the project also established a principle of it being mandatory for new graduates to undertake a project as part of their initial training.      (Return to list of photos)
